Frequently asked questions
Does this show live PNR status?
No, and it never contacts a railway server. Live status needs an authenticated API and an internet connection. This tool validates formats, decodes what the numbers mean, and computes fares, windows and refunds offline. For live status use the official IRCTC or NTES service.
What does a train number actually tell you?
The first digit gives the broad category: 1 and 2 are long-distance mail, express and superfast trains, 0 is a special, 5 is a passenger train on a conventional line, 6 is MEMU, 7 is DEMU or railcar, and 8 is a reserved special. The second digit indicates the zone, and the rest identify the service.
How accurate is the fare estimate?
It is indicative. It applies distance slabs with per-class multipliers plus the standard reservation fee, superfast surcharge and GST where applicable. Real fares vary with dynamic pricing on Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi services, flexi-fare trains, and concessions. Always confirm on the booking page.
Why is the PNR validator useful if it cannot check status?
Because most failed lookups are typing errors. A PNR is exactly ten digits and the first three encode the booking zone. Catching an eight-digit entry or a transposed digit before you search saves the round trip, and the decoder tells you which zone issued the ticket.
Are the refund rules current?
They follow the published cancellation slabs, but rules change and vary for Tatkal, waitlisted and RAC tickets. Treat the figure as an estimate and confirm against the current IRCTC cancellation policy before relying on it.
Is Railway Reference & Fare Tool free?
Yes. Railway Reference & Fare Tool is free for everyone and needs no sign-up to use. An account is only needed to export, download or print, because every export is recorded.
