Frequently asked questions

How are start dates calculated?

Forward pass from the project start. A task with no dependency starts on day one; a task with dependencies starts the working day after the latest of its predecessors finishes. Weekends and holidays are skipped when the working-days option is on.

What is the critical path?

The chain of tasks with zero float, where any delay pushes the project end date out by the same amount. Those bars are outlined in red. Tasks off the critical path have slack and can slip a little without moving the finish date.

How is float calculated?

By a backward pass from the project finish. Total float is the difference between a task's latest permissible start and its earliest possible start. Zero float means the task is critical.

Can a task depend on more than one other?

Yes. List several row numbers separated by commas, for example 2,5. Only finish-to-start dependencies are modelled, which covers the great majority of ordinary project plans.

Is the plan saved?

Yes. It is saved in this browser and synced to your account on the CRMTECH server, so it is restored on any device you sign in from, with earlier versions kept. Export to JSON or CSV to share it or open it in a spreadsheet.

Yes. Gantt & Timeline Planner is free for everyone and needs no sign-up to use. An account is only needed to export, download or print, because every export is recorded.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Gantt & Timeline Planner works inside your web browser, so the files you open are processed on your own device. If you sign in, the work you save (such as drafts and registers) is also kept in your account so it follows you to other devices.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.
